Work Life Experience in a Blog
    BLOG    1
Experience is the best teacher, so to experience a career is vital because students need to see first-hand what the work world is like. If you love what you do, then you never really work. As it is, I love art. I consider just about everything art. So working at a school with an emphasis on art will be enriching and I will log my progress on this blog weekly. :D

My mentors' names are Anton Devorabis and Beverly Axlerod. The former is an art teacher for 3 years and the latter is a first-year English teacher. Mr Devorabis is a great teacher who gets along with the students really well and teaches his curriculum in a very lively and interactive way. His objectives change from week to week and students must develop certain skills throughout the week. Each pertaining to the last, the skills eventually come together to make big projects. Because Ms. Axlerod is a first-year teacher she teaches every lesson for the first time everyday of the week. This can nerve-racking, but she has strong will to teach. Because teaching is a profession that one must love in order to do well, they both became teachers out of love for their subjects and teaching.

My main responsibility at this point is to learn how to teach and understand that various techniques and concepts that are involved when handling students, developing a curriculum, grading work, and how maintain focus. My title is as an "intern", not as a teacher's assistant. Although I do aid the teacher in tasks throughout the day, it is not my focal point as it is not fully aligned with the purpose of the WLE program. Throughout the program I also many of the concerns teachers must face a brainstorming methods to address them. Also, observing and taking objective notes on the students and the teacher. A typical day will consist of observation, data input, research on subject, and familiarizing myself with different aspects of teaching and the topics taught.

What I'm thinking about doing for my WLE project is to make a public domain website where students can upload work and receive feedback. This came to be because there was an idea for an "art exchange" program that seemed to be great, but would be too tedious and costly. At that point, I realized that the main point of the exchange would be to allow other people, beyond the school community, to see the art work and give it feedback. Because we live in technological age, I figured that it would be easier AND other schools are able to participate. I am so excited to see the different types of art and how different artists perception.

Today at my internship I learned how to apply a teaching technique called "Scaffolding". It is the method progressively gauging your students understanding of a topic. At first, it is assessing whether or not the student understands the general concept. Afterward, after a good while of repeating the skill, they should have a much firmer grasp on the concept, and should graded harder.
Today, my mentor and I did speak of a project. Based on the needs, which the project may solve. The main problem is having a place for students to showcase artwork in a rain-proof manner. As such, we began pitching ideas such as a glass case, or an school-art trading program. Some of the problems that arose were that a case would costly to build and I have no experience in construction.
My project remains conceptual at this point. However, we have isolated a need in the community.

The leadership skill that I use most in my WLE is collaborating productively. Because I am, for the most part, helping kids with projects that are currently happening. For example, for the shadow puppet project I am helping kids cut out puppets and finalize a lot of the concepts they will be using in the movie. Also, I collaborate with the teacher to meet certain objectives such as increasing class participation and how to imprint concepts on kids. I use this leadership skill very well. However, I can improve by doing it more often, there are some times where I space out and aren't doing anything productive. This leadership skill helps me learn how to teach on a close face-to-face manner. My mentor critically thinks the most, because art is a flexible subject and a lot of unforeseen dilemmas arise. Such as kids not understanding common sense concepts.

I learned that I have a natural talent for teaching (according to my mentor). I enjoy helping people and watching them progress past their point of struggle. Some challenges I faced throughout my WLE is being somewhat shy and being reluctant to interact people. I overcame this by just going for it. My creativity was evident throughout because it was an art class and the teacher, in order to familiarize me, had me do some art. For example, he would have me do the project earlier then the students so I can help kids in the coming days. What I learned in my WLE will affect my future in that it has made me think of more career choices. Because, now that I've experienced, I somewhat feel like I don't want to be a teacher.

In order to get my WLE, all I had to do was send an e-mail. Because my mentor was my friends adviser. The best way to get a job is to know someone who knows the employer. Because someone with credibility can speak to your character. Being a professional is understanding the role you have been hired for and fulfilling it. It also means taking responsibility for your obligations and doing everything expected of you in a given time frame.

Today at my WLE I helped my teacher prepare for a movie-making project. What that entailed was hanging up tarps to serve as backgrounds for shadow puppets. I've improved as intern in that I am not just a teacher's assistant but more of a teacher's apprentice. I learn and observe and have input in conducting parts of class. I am also self-sufficient and understand what my teacher needs and get it before asked. I also am very helpful to students and the see me as someone who can clarify aspects of the learned material. The greatest part of my workplace is watching the progress throughout the day and observing the different class psychology. For example the 1st lesson taught is rougher than the 4th because the teacher learns how to teach better as the day continues.

I think that my WLE has exposed me to a more academically oriented internship, as opposed to a musically oriented one like last year. I think it has opened my eyes to the lives of teachers and the struggles and rewards involved in the profession. I am now much more skeptical of whether or not I want to be a teacher. Therefore, I will explore many many many profession before settling for one. However, I am going to keep teaching in mind. Because it does seem enjoyable and interesting and everyday is something different. There is also a lot of flexibility in what goes on in a classroom, which is something I like about teaching. My goal is to explore my career options and to make sure that I  still get a degree in what I want to teach.
